Good Morning Nola!  I am so glad our weekend is finally here.  I just spent two fun but long days on the set of Looper, a futuristic movie starring Bruce Willis set in the New Orleans CBD.  Iam ready to get back out in the Quarter and enjoy some Mardi gras festivities.  It’s partly cloudy this morning with our high of seventy-five.  There is only a twenty percent chance of rain today and tomorrow.  Monday will bring with it a fifty-fifty chance so I would keep the umbrella handy.  This mild weather sure has the people out and about in the French Quarter in droves.  Parades and normal Quarter fun is on my agenda for the weekend.  There is a strong possibility that I will be catching flying Mardi Gras beads in the near future also.  Well my running buddies are waiting so I need to wrap this up so I can get out there.  Y’all have fun and I hope you catch lots of beads too.

I’ll see you in NOLA!

Good Morning NOLA!  TGIF!  We are starting off our day with some clouds but the sunwill be out a little later today.  Spring like highs are still around with our’s for today being seventy five.  The low tonight will drop into the fifties again so we are looking around fifty -four degrees.  Another day for me on the set of Looper in the CBD. It was actually quite nice walking over to set  from the French Quarter in the morning. It was warm yesterday but the breeze saved the day.  Looks like we will have more of the same today with the winds five to ten miles per hour according to the forecast. This is suppose to take place in the fall or winter so I was slightly overdressed for the forecast.  Great weather up ahead for the weekend.  Parade going shuld not be a problem.  There is a possiblity of some showers on Monday but the weekend looks clear.  Have a fabulous Friday!

I’ll see you in NOLA!

Good Morning NOLA!  Some of you who were out last night for the unofficial kickoff of the Mardi Gras parade seaon might not think so right about now but it will be alright.  We have a few clouds this morning with the sun making an appearance a little later in the day.  The high is still in the seventies with just a twenty percent chance of rain in the forecast. our low for tonight is lower sixties.  We may get some showers later in the week but for now  it is clear. This is great Mardi Gras weather. I had carried a light jacket but didn’t really need it. There are more parades on the way.  There was lots of skin showing in the Quarter at Krewe de Vieux last night.  This is the first time in quite a while that it hasn’t been cold. Make sure you have your King Cake and other necessary Mardi Gras survival items.   Enjoy your Sunday in the Cresecent City.  See you in NOLA!

How can you get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt?

Question by LSU (11-2): How can you get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt?
In Louisiana this is actually an offense! Yeah we all know seatbelts save lives but if people choose not to wear one its their own choice. They are not endangering anyone else. I think the government just uses it to get more money while saying “we are just saving lives”. Most people do wear them but if you don’t want to you should not be forced to wear one.

The law is the law, and personal choice does not enter into the equation at all

Good Morning NOLA!  The bananna tree in the courtyard looks as cold as I feel.  It is chilly out there people!  The sun is back for a little while even though our nights will be cold. Keep an eye on your pets, plants and pipes for now.  There is no rain in the forecast until a week from today.  So it’s just us and Mr. Sunshine.  Our weekend still looks like it will be beautiful.  Our Highs will be in the fifties for today and tomorrow then warming slightly with daytime highs bumping up into the sixties.  You will still want a jacket or sweater, but what great weather to get out and do something.  I am so looking forward to this weekend.  I feel like I have been hibernating .  Come see me at the OCH Market  on Saturday.  there will be lots of cool stuff.  I know you can find something for that specail Valentine.  You will want to check out my book “I Love You Bigger Than The Sky!”  See you in NOLA!

The History Of Mardi Gras From Beginning To Modern Day New Orleans

Mardi Gras

The History Of Mardi Gras From Beginning To Modern Day New Orleans

Whenever you think of Mardi Gras many people normally picture NOLA or New Orleans LA. It was not always correct. How do you think New Orleans get to be the home for the Greatest Free Show On Earth? Well let’s go long ago to the starting point of Mardi Gras.

The Origins Of Mardi Gras

Despite the fact that Mardi Gras is perceived of having its roots in the Roman Catholic religion, it really dates back into the days of ancient rome. During the calendar month of February, the Romans celebrated any occasion they called Lupercalia. The god Lupercus was the god of fertility, agriculture and pastoral shepherds along with the festival was held in his honor. Carnival that is considered synonymous with Mardi Gras comes from the Latin expression meaning “farewell to the flesh”. This holiday was much like the Mardi Gras we all know today. It possessed a festival almost circus atmosphere. There was also the festival of Saturnalia that seemed to have some impact on the roots of Mardi Gras. This holiday was also a time period of jubilation that occurred throughout the end of December. The king was burned in effigy and was created to look ugly in appearance. This is where some of the traditions of masking seem to have been derived. Some of the colors of Mardi Gras, purple, green and gold may have come from this festival.

When Rome converted to Christianity, a common practice was to take pagan holidays and incorporate them into church holidays. Lupercalia was an example of that approach. So Lupercalia became Mardi Gras. This period was created to be a last fling of partying, merriment and good times that came before the period of fasting, prayer and penance called Lent. Through the Lenten period the faithful say good bye towards the pleasures along with indulgences of the flesh. This period lasts from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday or 40 days.

This tradition started to be a major holiday in the metropolis of Paris over the Medieval Times while it dispersed across the continent of Europe. Throughout the Middle Ages lords organised large carnivals prior to Lent to honor the enrollment of the latest knights to the service with the local lord or baron. In France, it was a particularly raucous time.  Look for the next segment on the history of Mardi Gras.

The term “Fat Tuesday” as well as Mardi Gras described the indulgence that occurred.
